In 1539 a European by the name of Marcos de Niza visited the Arizona area. From 1540 to 1542 Coronado led an expedition through Arizona. In the late 17th century and early 18th century, Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino built missions and taught Indians Christianity in Southern Arizona. Spain is responsible for founding Tubac Arizona in 1752 and Tucson in 1775. Arizona was part of Mexico after it declared independence from Spain in 1822. After the Mexican-American war in 1848, the United States took control of the territory. In 1853 part of Arizona was purchased from Mexico and controlled as part of the Territory of New Mexico. Later on Feb 24, 1863, Arizona was organized into a seperate territory. Arizona officially became part of the United States on Feb 14, 1912.
